Since the 18th Edition was released in July we have had a lot of people ask us ‘Why do I need to do the exam?’ So we thought it would be a good idea to write a short blog to explain what the 18th Edition means and why it is important you complete the exam before 1st January 2019.
The requirement for most competent persons schemes
From 2019 it is expected that electricians and electrical contractors will need to comply with the 18th Edition in order to show clients and employers that their work adheres to the latest British Standard for electrical installation.
From 01 January 2019, anyone applying for an Installation or Maintenance Electrician gold card for the first time will be required to sign up for Registered Electrician status. This means the applicant must be qualified to the current edition of BS7671 (18th Edition) when the application is made and they must also sign up to a Code of Professional Practice, this in addition to holding the minimum qualifications required for the card.
From 01 July 2019, any existing Installation or Maintenance Electrician gold card holders who have let their card lapse for more than a year will be required to renew as a Registered Electrician.
So, even if you already have a valid card and are trained up to Level 3 you will still need to complete the 18th Edition when it comes to renewing your card.
Why should I book onto a course to complete my 18th Edition?
By enrolling on a course you will give yourself the best chance of passing first time by studying in an environment which lends itself to learning. You will have an experienced tutor on hand to explain the changes in detail and what you need to know to pass the exam.
You can take yourself away from your day to day distractions and allocate yourself the time to do the studying you need. Completing an 18th Edition training course you will get the support you need to help you pass the exam first time.
If you are already compliant with the 17th Edition you will only need to complete a 1 day refresher course in order to complete the exam!
